Ramboldia subnexa (Stirt.) Kantvilas & Elix

  Bryologist 97: 301 (1994); Lecidea subnexa Stirt., Trans. Glasgow Soc. Field Naturalists 4: 94 (1876). T: Tas., 1875, H.Paton; lecto: GLAM, fide G.Kantvilas & J.A.Elix, loc. cit.; syn: Tas., 1875, H.Paton; BM, GLAM.

Thallus pale tan, composed of dispersed or contiguous convex areolae c.0.25 mm wide, less than 0.1 mm thick, often evident only around the apothecia, esorediate. Photobiont cells to 15 µm wide. Apothecia sessile, round or irregularly roundish, to 1.5 (–2.0) mm wide; disc jet-black, matt to glossy, plane then undulate and convex; margin thin, ±translucent brownish when very young, soon black and glossy, occasionally flexuose, persistent or becoming excluded in old apothecia. Epithecium 8–10 µm thick, olive-brown to deep golden brown, K– or K+ pale dingy brown. Excipulum similarly coloured. Hymenium 35–50 µm thick, pale yellow-brown to hyaline, K–. Paraphyses conglutinate, sparingly branched, septate with short irregularly swollen cells to 5 µm wide, containing large conspicuous vacuoles; apices hyaline, not expanded. Hypothecium 50–90 µm thick, hyaline to pale yellow-brown, K–; subhypothecium golden brown, K+ intense yellow. Asci 30–40 × 12–16 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, 7–12 × 2.5–5 µm, occasionally with plasma bridges. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and subhypothecium, K+ intense yellow; containing thamnolic acid.

Scattered in south-eastern Australia (N.S.W., A.C.T. and Tas.), this lichen has been recorded only from decorticated Eucalyptus wood in habitats identical to those of R. stuartii, although mainly at subalpine elevations.
